Coping Skills

He leads me beside the still waters, he restoreth my soul.
  Psalm 23:2

Hello Dear One,
Most of you know that I am a neat freak.  I am probably the only person in Clearwater who loves, loves the smell of Pine Sol and Lysol.  This week I decided to re-do my bedroom:  new paint, bedlinens, and art.  Windows were washed inside and out, blinds dusted, and much purging was done.  Goodwill must have been pleased with all my donations of clutter.  By Friday, the room looked fresh and new, but my joy felt lifeless.  Bone tired and with joints aching, I poured myself an Epson salt bath and nestled into the steaming water and prepared to savor the massaging jets of welcoming relief from my pain. As I relaxed into the meditative moment, I had an insight. I had once again done what I always tend to do when dealing with difficult emotions. I got busy.  I had fallen victim to the mistaken belief that outer order will create inner calm. This has always been my go-to coping mechanism.  What needed arranged was not my furniture, but my mindset. Being a Christian, I understand that the Bible affirms that rain will fall on the just and the unjust, but I just could not wrap my head, heart, or spirit around the fact that Chris had died such a tragic and unexpected death.  And so I cleaned.
We all have coping mechanisms:  some use alcohol, anxiety-relieving drugs, exercise, over-eating, or shopping.  Prayer works for me only after I have cleaned out the messiness and am ready to receive the peace that only Christ can offer.  Friend, whether you are dealing with a sudden death, debt, relationship discord, or misbehaving children, it is important to have an action plan in place. Bless you if you are one of those fortunate individuals who turn to Christ first. I clean and my bedroom and my mind feel renewed. My soul is restored. If you turn to Jesus first, or after you have exhausted your own resources, He stands waiting to receive you.  Thank you Savior,                                                                                                                                                                                                                            Linda

A Feather on the Breath of God

For in him we live and move and have our being.
                                                                                                                                                                         Acts 17:28
Hello Friend,
In this portion of scripture, Paul was before the Areopagus and he was explaining that it is not difficult to find God; that if perhaps they might grope for him, they would find him for He is not far away from each one of us.  In times of stress, you and I pray and ask God for answers (usually our concept of what we desire to happen) and God can seem distant and far away.  I know that our Father answers each and every prayer—just not in our timing or the answer we seek.  So what are we to do while waiting for our miracle?
Here is an interesting quote from Hildegard of Bingen which might give us pause for reflection.
“Listen:  there was once a king sitting on his throne.  Around Him stood great and wonderfully beautiful columns ornamented with ivory, bearing the banners of the king with great honour.  Then it pleased the king to raise a small feather from the ground, and he commanded it to fly.  The feather flew, not because of anything in itself, but because the air bore it along.  Thus am I, a feather on the breath of God.”
I am still learning to be a feather on God’s breath.  I huff and puff and try all methods of control only to realize my efforts are in vain.  I try way too often to direct my own and other’s paths.  How wonderful it would be to rest instead on the loving breath of God and let it all depend on him.  To let go gently and relax has been my constant prayer.  Oh, Lord, give to the courage to trust you and your will in all matters.  Allow me to breathe.  Transform me and allow me to glide on your breath--as a feather.  Friend, if you are struggling with stressful situations, let go and let God.  I understand in my heart that this is a much saner way to live.
Won’t you join me this week in an exercise of trusting our Father to guide and direct our paths.  Listen! I hear a whisper of a breeze!                                                                                                                                                                  Linda

Pray for our Nation

From the four corners of the earth people are coming to their senses, are running back to God.
                                                                               Psalm 22:27 (Message Bible)

Hello Friend,
Do you think the above statement is true?  Are people running to God?  Do you think the recent horrific terrorist attacks in our country and around the world have brought people to their spiritual knees? The answer is a resounding NO!  There has been no increase in weekly worship service attendance; about 42% say they go to church at least weekly, 12% go monthly; 26% go seldom and 20% never go.  Remember all those stories of people flooding into church in the wake of September 11th?  They drifted back out within weeks.

Do you think our country is in moral decline?  I have great concerns about the direction of our nation and my prayers have been focused on the upcoming election.  Maybe you are concerned as well.  Will you set aside time in your day planner for prayer?  We all have time-wasters on our schedule we could   eliminate.  Of course, we need downtime—time for relaxation and play.  But we need uptime (thinking on the higher things) as well.  Let’s not wait for another terrorist attack to bring us back to God.  Pray for a resurgence of righteousness.  Ask for God’s grace to cover our failures.  Ask for God’s guidance for our current and future leaders.  Be a peace-seeker and strive to eliminate violence in word and deed.  We need to return to the faith of our Fathers.   We need the Lord’s wisdom and blessing on our country now.   We have faced many difficult times in our past; our faith has sustained us,  and our country has always prevailed.  Let us make “One nation under God” much more than a slogan.  Let freedom ring!
 Linda
